the PRODUCTION of "WALLS"
walls is a short film i created in a matter of a few days, and its pretty awful. when i was taking film classes in high school, they were more oriented at live-action productions, which nowadays can obviously be shot, at their quickest, in as little as an hour. most films had about a week - from writing, to shooting, to editing, to sound, etc - to be finished. walls clocks in at about four minutes long, so animating it within this timeframe would've been impossible. plus, i was strapped with a lot of other coursework (and my day job), which made getting an animated short film out in a week even harder. eventually, a few days before the deadline, realizing i needed to do something, walls was born out of pure spontaneity.
originally, after the storyboards, i immediately got to work animating, convinced that i may actually be able to squeeze something out. about two scenes were completely animated before i abandoned this idea, realizing how absolutely terrible it was. although these were never shot under the camera, the pencil tests for these scenes still exist on videotape.
i switched to digital for the project early in realizing just how quickly i had to get this idea out. i didn't have a scanner, i wasn't shooting the animatic on film (that'd be a bit of a waste), and i sure as hell wasn't presenting it on VHS...
it culminated into this strange, strange thing, where just about the only part i don't cringe at is my friend patrick's vocal performance. the recording session tape is still one i play over and over. lots of noises and weird patrickisms.
